MicroNugget: How to Run X11 Over SSH

In this video, Shawn Powers covers how to run the X Window System (X11) over Secure Shell (SSH). This is a bit like VNC where you remotely control the computer, but is different in the fact that you’re actually running a GUI application on your local machine that’s hosted on another machine over SSH.

Running the X Window System over SSH appears to be similar in some ways to VNC, where you’re remotely controlling a computer.

However, what you’re actually doing is leveraging a graphical user interface on your local machine to run a single application on a remote server.

Some of the applications of this approach include running a configuration program or testing something remotely that requires GUI access or a GUI interface.

Shawn will walk you through executing this function, starting with demonstrating what it looks like and the commands you’ll need to use with Ubuntu.

He’ll end by showing you how to terminate the connection properly.
