Too bad most people are scared of anything nuclear related. The nuclear engine could have let us colonize Mars by now.

This isn't something you'd use as a lower stage at sea level. Engines that use combustion (either with hypergolic liquids or with a fuel and oxidizer) have a much higher thrust to weight ratio than nuclear engines. As a result, nuclear engines are great for use in space because they have a high specific impluse (meaning they are very fuel efficient), and better suited for use in space.

Just adding to what this guy said, nuclear engines are promising but not a total replacement to engines that utilize combustion.

nuclear thermal engine "over time" sounds similar to 'ion engine' where instead of roaring BOOM to get us going this simpler more continuous thrust builds up the hill'sec per sec/sec' typ thing.

With this primitive technology we might be able to send enough equipment to an extreme event happening in quadrant G...you know "that event we don't advertise "... and easily collect shit-tonnes of anti-matter.

Leap Frog from low to high tech...
