Small property owners showed up in droves to the Rent Board this week to debate whether landlords should be required to disclose their finances to pass along any debt. Currently, they don’t have to and tenants want that to change. Susie Steimle reports. (11-6-2019)

This is the problem with renting. It isn't your property

Sf rent made me leave the city years ago. The city is literally on the edge of viability. Rents are so high that people will not be able to actually live. And what a weird city it will be with no real heart, no citizens.. no Resturants, shops or normal life

Why is this referred to as passing along debt? The landlord's debt on the property is not a deciding factor in determining rent.
If someone buys a rental property, they rent it at market value. If the rent asked for is too high, it will go unoccupied.

I wonder if the response from the city is the same, if the rent is raised due to an increase in property taxes?

Just get the hell out of that chit hole.... You move to any other state and your cost of living is half what it is... The move would pay for itself and more.

It's funny people act like moving to a different city is such a traumatic thing 😂

Screw it. If I couldn't raise the rents enough to cover my costs, including servicing the debt I'd sell the building or even tear it down and sell the vacant land. It's my property and I should be able to charge whatever the market will bear...!

What the hell are you talking about? Pass on their debt? What does that even mean? I think you are talking about a landlord having to raise prices because they need to cover their expenses. In other words, without raising rent prices, they would be incurring a loss on the property. It doesn't mean they are making renters pay their credit cards off, or their mortgage off.

The owners should sell the property to a shell company and fake a remodel to get tenants out and then charge a reasonable rate. Owners are being forced to subsidize those who feel they deserve low rents

City and board of superiors pass off taxes and increase cost every yeAr. Don’t demonize small pop and mom property. The problem lies with the City offials who can fix the housing

In the past most people who can’t afford the living cost actually move to a more affordable city. There is also another reason why so many retirees moved to places like Florida, Utah and Arizona because living cost is cheap.

In my opinion if you don’t have any skill trades or any relevant form of employment that is part of the Industry of the city. I don’t see the point of people staying. If you have no job, or even just a regular low skilled retail job that you could get anywhere such as restaurant servers. I don’t see why you need to stay. There are thousands of cities, there are 50 states. Some places will offer you better quality-of-life if you are willing to move there. Pretty much people need to adapt or move on.

Pretty much if you don’t own any properties in the city and you also don’t have a skilled trades job that pays you well to live here I don’t see the point of staying.

Looking at it from their point of view-why not. I heard of a propaganda campaign that used the slogan Rent is theft to put in a new form of rent control that made it possible for landlords to even bother to rent property. Tenants in Common seemed to have taken off-in the 90s I believe.

Just another reason to NOT vote "D".

It’s a business, not charity. The city should make up the difference.

If you can’t pay the rent then you need to move. I don’t care if you lived there you entire life. The tenant can move to Antioch.
