How To Solve Volkswagen / Audi Misfire Issues!

Today I dive into misfire problems with my MK5 Rabbit. I ended up taking the car apart, inspecting wiring, coil packs and spark plugs and solving the problem. This process could be used to inspect nearly all european vehicles that have similar problems, including the GTI, Jetta, Golf, Passat, A4, A5, A6, BMWs, and other Audis and Volkswagens. Ignition coils and plugs are nearly always the culprit when this problem occurs. Common fault codes are P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, and so on. These indicate a misfire. I hope this video helps you fix your misfire and check engine light issues!

Thank you for posting this! I used this video to solve my issue on a Volkswagen Polo S 16V 2007 1.4L Petrol. The car was returning on-board diagnostic error code P0351 ("Ignition Coil A Primary/Secondary Circuit"). The car itself, when switched on, was shuddering. The issue was an engine misfire and the solution was to replace the ignition coil. I also replaced the spark plugs in all cylinders whilst I was fixing the issue. I am in the United Kingdom, so I bought the replacement parts via Euro Car Parts and saved myself quite a lot of money (as well as educating myself on how my car works and basic car maintenance).

Thank you!

Good effort!
A mechanic did me favour once, steamed cleaned the engine bay and all 4 plug wells were swimming. Surprised it ran at all!

Man, thank you for this. I followed your instructions and it worked in my VW Polo too.

The old spark plug was in bad shape and there was a lot of loose dirt/carbon just sitting around where the plug sits. Used a can of compressed air to clean out the cylinder and also cleaned the coil with electrical contact cleaner.

Car is running smooth as butter now. No more misfires!

I have a 2006 Audi A3 2.0T TFSI
The upgraded R8 coil packs and 3 or 4-prong Bosch spark plugs (gapped at 30/1000) are a good cheap fix to this way too common problem.
Other relatively inexpensive upgrades you can do yourself that ARE 100% related to this issue are:
- USE A FUEL CLEANER EVERY OTHER FILL UP (these engines DO burn oil - so USE SYN and change your oil)
- Add a cold-air intake (deletes the problematic engine cover w/ integrated air filter) - and clean your MAF when you do it.
- Do the Cam follower replacement (could be causing a cam issue OR a fuel pressure issue - or both) and/OR the high-pressure fuel pump maintenance
- ALTERNATOR replacement (causing a power issue)

The valve cover gasket is what keeps the plug holes dry. Change it. A lot of people have this issue.

electronic mouse blockers give off high pitch sounds that keep mice away, even the cat will not climb on the car, I have them on my truck and car, they work great

You would be amazed at all of the systems that are adversely effected by bad coil packs. Those suckers are constant battle on my 2013 vw cc 2.0 tsi.. I think next I'm going to check the coil pack wire harness for cracks and shorts.

My misfire issue was resolved, here is how.

So my issue was EPC lights come on when the car oil temp is around 90C, and it starts misfiring and again between 2 to 3k RPM there is that sound.

Cylinder 3 was misfiring all the time.
Check spark plus, they were clean
Change coils (Issue was still there)
Cleaned injectors (Issue was still there)
Check throttle body, it had an issue so I changed it (misfire was still there)
Found I had an oil leak, through the PCV and got it fixed (issue was still there)

Screw it, opened up the engine.

Issues I found.
Valve springs needed replacement
Camshaft was a little damaged
Piston rings were gone.

And I changed the timing tensioner while at it and fixed the headers.

After these changes, the car is driving fine.

My engine drove the same 150k KM, stage 1 tune REVO.
Tune did not add the issue, I track the car all the time.

I hope my input helps anyone desperate.

I don't suppose you or anyone might have a link for a replacement coil pack wiring harness? Working on my dad's 07 Jetta, replaced the coil packs, spark plugs and even the connector plugs from the wiring harness. I'm guessing my connections for the new plugs aren't the best, I still have no spark in cylinder 4. Other than replacing the entire coil pack harness or taking to the dealer I've changed everything. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Also - change the fuel filter if your car is over 8 years old.
