What is Theta?

One day I was sitting in math class learning about triangles, trigonometry, and angles, and my math teacher started using a term I had never heard before: theta. He was saying things like “solve for theta” or “what is the measure of theta?” I was confused all class long, but as it turns out, theta is just a variable, like x or A.
