As an arranger who started as a string player, it has always been harder to find good resources for contemporary and jazz styles in string writing, I wish I'd found this sooner when I was in school for arranging this would have been a wonderful resource. thanks so much for your work on this and for posting this hits home in a really personal way both because of the string writing and because I love nelson riddle.

The 3-bar intro from 0m46s suggests to me that Nelson Riddle had heard the music of Franz Schmidt. There's a lot of this stuff in Schmidt's second opera, "Fredigundis".

Besides absolute perfection in harmony and voicing, this approach of playing the stringed instruments, con sordino, with its characteristic portamento effects is of great importance. Nowadays, there is not a single orchestral violinist, violist or cellist left who plays like this, and that is a tragic fact. It is a perfect era, destroyed by business and turned into a memory for old people, young people will never have an idea of this beauty, based on Ravel and Debussy and at the same time so deeply American.

Don't think I've ever pressed the pause button so many times during one video. That intro!! Thank you for this, David. (I've been checking out the Nelson Riddle/Oscar Peterson record a lot recently.)

Wonderful reduction. When I first started arranging for big band I think I learned more from studying scores and reductions like this than anything else.

This arrangement is very interesting! The strings have a very specific sound to them, they're not quite lush nor are they filled with rich harmony. They're cool and thin, rather than warm and rich like other arrangers. An acquired taste, I dig it!

Ella had perfect pitch making her ideal choice for singing on top of Nelson's poly harmonies. early 70's I studied with Tommy Gumina founder of Polytone, greatly influenced by Nelson. Traditional tube amplifier overtones annoyed him so he created Polytone Amps that only produced fundamentals. Joe Pass, Ray Brown and other greats loved them.

This is amazing thank you for sharing this. Is there any chance of getting a pdf of the score? Every time I pause the video the overlay of video controls obscures the score. At least on my iPhone.

In bar 19, could the final note be a Bb instead of Db?

Just wow. But if only I could read music. Love the way this sounds. I mean, I have a basic grasp of diatonic modes and scales, chord extensions, and a flaky understand of blues reharmonisation. But wow. I love harmony.

Great! You should do Ravel's prelude in A minor, it is quite short, but packed with harmony!
