Hauptwerk Combination Organ

Stops from four different organs were combined together to create a much larger organ. The concern was that combining "wet" samples from different organ sample sets, with different reverberations and room acoustics would create a less-than-satisfactory end result. This video dispels that concern.

Sometimes more is less and less is more. I played the "Great Romantic Organ" organ for several weeks/months, but finally purchased the Domkerk Utrecht sample-set. Only 57 stops, but : Less is more. With couplings and several beautiful solo registers it is my favorite organ.

Mike: I own all the sample sets from which I selected the stops. I wanted to create a custom organ that reflected what I would want. Some of my sample sets ( i.e. The St. Maximin) has superb reeds and Mixtures but basically is a three manual organ because the top manual has very few stops and some of them do not have a complete compass. Other sample sets have superb Principals (Freiberg and Zwolle). The Forcalquier sample set has some really nice Bourdons. None of them had a powerful 32' pedal reed, so I picked the Contre Bombarde from the Caen. Overall the organ design was to lean towards batteries of reeds on all manuals topped by Mixtures. If you notice it is not an organ with a lot of colorful reeds. I could have added them, but where do you draw the line ? Thanks for watching

This has the best sounding 32' Reed I have ever heard in a hauptwerk sample set geez!

I'm not at liberty to give away free sample sets, I paid Jake (Custom Hauptwerk Organs) to create this for me. To answer the question about "Bigger is not always better" all I can say is that it is nice to have them at your disposal. It seems that RAM and processors are the limiting factor in the size of these organs. I rarely play the full organ as it is too much noise. My computer has 12 cores (fast ones) and 98 GB RAM. My friend has the same set up and he says bigger is better. His wife agrees with him.

I think if you closely at the specs you will see it is not a Romantic Organ therefore no Strings, Oboe or Clarinets. It's supposed to be a combination of different Baroque organs (Zwolle, Silberman, St. Maximin and Forcalquier) with lots of Mixtures and Trumpets. I think it sounds fantastic. You can't please everybody. I think you need to hear the four manual extension organ (Romantic) by Subbass. It's got everything you asked for.

This opens a whole new avenue of playing. I would have loved to hear the Fourniture and Plein Jeu ranks though...

That's a lot of mixtures! Yowza! You got a pretty neat idea here, but personally I'd trade almost all those mixtures for more 8' fonds. 😬

To Boerbok Man:I agree it is a lot of Mixtures. The nice thing about Hauptwerk is that I could create an organ with a lot more Fonds. If you look at the stops ( by enlarging the screen) you will see a lot of duplication (i.e. The reeds and Mixtures and Principals). This organ was intended to be an experiment. The question was: could I combine stops from different organs with different reverbs. I say yes, but you have to decide for yourself. I think this organ has about 100 stops so it is taking up a lot of memory. I recently got a 12-core MacPro with 96 GB RAM so I could triple the size of this organ if I wanted to. I have done other experiments like large, lush string divisions, etc. It seems anything is possible within the memory limits of the computer.

Great Work!

I purchased the original sample sets and had Hauptwerk Custom organs create a new specification. This particular sample set is in direct, not n in surround. That's because my computer had 32GB ram. My new computer has 98GB Ram so a stereo surround sample would fit.

How much did all these sample sets cost you? This sounds absolutely awesome. When I have the money someday, I will try this too.

Very well done, I like it!
But now, my big question is this: How did you put those stops together?

I am not sure what you mean by "definition". Could you explain a little more what it is you want ?

It's possible to get a definition of this organ?

This was a custom specification that I created based on all free samples.. Where are you located ? Do you have Hauptwerk ?
