2021 Toyota Supra meets the BMW M2 CS: the Mk4's real successor | Jason Cammisa on the Icons Ep. 01

What makes a Supra, a Supra? Our veteran automotive journalist Jason Cammisa asks that very question as he pits the updated Mk5 A90 Supra against its mechanical twin, the BMW Z4 M40i as well as the Mk5's predecessor, the A80 Mk4 Supra Turbo.

Cammisa also heads to Toyota's CALTY Design Research Center to visit the magnificent FT-1 concept car that gave life to the Supra — where he chats with Kevin Hunter, its designer, about the challenges in grafting the FT-1's design language onto the Z4's hard points.

The surprise star of the video is the 2021 BMW M2 CS. On paper, it would seem to have nothing to do with the Supra, but in fact, there's an argument to be made that it's an even better Supra than the Supra itself.

The camera angle and Whoever was behind the camera is a pro in the movie industry.

Like, this is literally the highest production value, best executed car content you can get right now. I am floored.

This is one of the most exhilarating videos (if not the most ) regarding the M2 cs. Thanks Jason and Hagerty for this. Every segment is a bliss to watch.
Every M2CS entry was unbelievably gorgeous! The production, videography and the sound effects are impeccable!!

This is arguably some of the best, most all-round car-related productions on You Tube. Definitely top 1% stuff. Great job guys. Story, humour, editing, visuals. Nailed them all. I bow to you.

Watched this video and at the ending screen fade I was expecting to hear the applause of the Top Gear studio. It honestly felt like I was watching 2008 Top Gear again. Bravo Jason, as usual.

People always downplay the Supra because they say its just a BMW with a Toyota bodykit, but they forget that the car was Co-Developed. Not a overhyped Z4, a Co-Developed BMW and Toyota. They may have similar engines, but they're different in many ways other than the way they look and who's badge is on the front bumper.

I'll bite on this one since our videos covered the same points. Making a ground up sports car these days is a bad business move on almost every single front. They don't sell enough, unless they are Marquee established brands like Mustang, 911 and Corvette. They are also far more costly unless built on a shared archetecture where everything is shared out. (Thats how BMW makes sporty GT cars) Toyota is the first to say people don't care about their sports cars until they are gone, Supra, LFA, MR2. So much like this Cammisa video, it would not exist without corporate backing and a paycheck, because 99% of automotive passion projects don't pay.

Point is the modern Supra is one of the best sports cars for 50k new. If you want companies to take risks on enthusiast products, buy them now because cars like this are short for this world.

I rewatch this every couple years. Worth it just for Jason’s laughs when flat footing the MkIV Turbo

As a car designer, seeing this explanation about hard points brings tears of joy. People seldom understand the toll these take on our designs. Awesome job Jason Camisa.

Dear Hagerty,

Please give this man whatever he needs to make whatever he wants. Even if what he wants to make are karaoke videos.

Sincerely,

Dear Hagerty,
I’m a car guy, Jason is the only guy who speaks our language. He could speak in German, French, or Chinese and we would still watch his videos because that’s his gift! I honestly enjoyed this more than everything I’ve seen on YouTube in years!
PLEASE KEEP JASON & GIVE HIM WHATEVER HE NEEDS TO MAKE CONTENT LIKE THIS!

This was like watching an intense action movie ... damn, I didn't notice that I've watched 20+ minutes on a car show

I recently got into a 23 GR Supra. As someone who wanted an older model BMW as a kid, this car hits a lot of the same notes for me. The powerful Mark(Mach)5! I drive it like my old 99 Corolla except for when I don’t. One thing about that car was it hauled a lot of people around, and this one doesn’t which I don’t mind. It corners like a dream and windows down driving is a must. It being modeled on a Z4 I believe lends itself to this. The wind buffeting that I haven’t got parts for yet happens between 70-105km. I look at it as reason to drive slow on the street and fast on the highway. Same way I learned how I get in and out long term, go in backwards then roll. Getting out swing both legs and look to the trunk and slide out. Windows are down. Pop the trunk. Close the door. Open the trunk. Put a finger on the door handle roll up the windows. Close the trunk. Rate my swag lol. A lot of fun can be had at 2000 Rpm’s or less. Anything more isn’t worth the excessive extra fuel consumption. 94 should be sipped slowly. This isn’t an 89 engine yet at 3400km. Maybe after the first oil change in 10k km, but not before. I’m glad I got the automatic and how chill it is to just listen to it drive so effortlessly. Or make a game of not using the brakes or minimizing it. Truly a drivers machine. Thank You Gazoo Racing!
