Runway occupied, don’t land!

What happens when you catch a slower plane trying to land on the same runway? A busy day at the airport in Melbourne, watch and hear what ATC and I do to help everyone safely land.

I remember the first lesson I had at Moorrabbin. Hearing that we were cleared to land when I could visibly see the previous aircraft still on the runway and the next aircraft in queue behind us was quite the experience. Classic Moorrabbin

I’ve been the slower bird in the pattern many times at both controlled and uncontrolled fields. A few times I have been given instructions to extend downwind to change sequencing so the faster aircraft could get in before me, and others have been instructed to do a 360deg turn to create separation. The field I am based out of has parallel runways with one being massive and the other a wee thing. Usually I ask for the tiny runway so all you fast planes can have the huge one.

Moorabin seems to be infested with CAE Oxford C172s! During the rush hour it's just like 80% CAE C172s!

In Germany most fields are uncontrolled for the smaller aicraft. If they are busy its always a challenge to do that with a few aircraft with different speeds without controller support.
Also you have to stick to the official traffic circuit exatly, otherwise there are noise complaints immediately.

In a Tomahawk at Archerfield in the early 90s...

There were only 4 Tomahawks, a Duchess, a Skipper and a Lance in the circuit area at that particular point in time🤦🏼‍♂️
The Lance, which was behind me, didn't see me, and cut inside me turning final, and touched down in front of me.
Tower told me to go around. Immediately after, the Lance declared he was doing a touch and go.
Fun and games. Tower guy had to shuffle everyone around.
Turns out Lance guy had his radio turned down...

This is what a cranky garmin sounds like. It can hold grudges but doesnt have the vocabulary for the word "bastards". So, it just exclaims traffic at you again. Like any pet, you learn when its upset and what it looks/sounds like hahaha.
Thought you were going to resort to doing some S turns on final to add extra track distance...

I was recently stuck behind a 152 in a Twin Beech 76 Duchess and I was doing everything possible to slow her down, gear down, flaps down, low power ... It's stressful because you are getting very close to dangerous speeds in the circuit being low and slow AND close to other aircraft makes for a high workload.

I fly a Velocity and this happens a lot. My normal approach on final is 80 knots and touch down at 70 knots.

At uncontrolled airports you can simply fly a circle and continue the approach. Ive had to do it several times so far.

Imagine what flight training at a regional airport that several major airlines each operate multiple flights into and out of each day must be like.

Would it be possible to do S-shaped banking turns to increase separation or would that not help much? Or is it too late for that?

Never let ATC pressure you into an uncomfortable approach. I'm sure you've heard about all the pilots that died trying too hard to please ATC.

By speaking as if this is a problem & eliciting a few concerning comments, are you looking to alienate local support for the airport though? Would it be better to build further away from heavily populated suburbs?
