Many folks have mentioned that i said "chip" but i meant "swarf." You're absolutely right. I don't know what i was thinking. More coffe before filming!

Yup, good on ya for teaching this sorta thing to new generations that didn’t grow up making things/fixing things.

Back in the days before diamond stones my father used to swear by dishwashing detergent. Good lubricant and mobilised the swarf/chips when rinsed.

The amount of stuff I learn for just a few seconds from your shorts is actually insane!!😅👍👍

That’s one reason we lubricant stones the other is to keep heat down, for example if you heat treat something it becomes harder to break and holds its edge for much longer but if you sharpen it without lubricant on the stone it becomes hot and loses its temper that also why you can’t dish wash really nice knives

use the diamond stone dry and wash with dish soap and a brush when it gets dirty

Paul Sellers suggests glass cleaner as a lapping fluid, and having tried many options, I tend to agree.

And if you need to remove rust from tools, I would also recommend to add oil before using an abrasive.

I don't know where I first read this, but on my diamond stones I use window cleaner, it's light and floats away what's referred to here.

This applies to sandpaper as well. The grains and grit will get filled with sawdust, leaving you with paper. Brushes can be used to clean your sandpaper since oil wouldn't help it too much

Do you ever boil your stones? I'm told every once in a while it is good to boil your stones to allow the impurities such as excess metal and dirt and oil to come out so that they function better and relieve the pores

Swarf can definitely be a problem. One way to deal with it mechanically (apart from lubricating it) is to set rare earth magnets near, but not on the actual sharpening surface. If you can passively pull the metallic particles away, it prevents the clogging problem for a lot longer and leaves grit down on the stone you can continue to use.

3-in-1 on my diamond stones and I both lubricate and prevent from rusting 👍

It also makes a gritty paste that also removes material

@OUTDOORS55 uses his diamond stones dry and just brushes them off with a cloth. He seems to do just fine.

Dawn and water in a spray bottle is the best for diamond stones.

I would suggest using water oil gets gunked up inside a lot of stones

Pencil eraser does wonders to diamond sharpener plates if you've used yours dry or it fills regardless 😁👌

You can use diamond plates dry. In fact, many will rust over time with water. Just gently wipe away the swarf with a clean paper towel microfiber cloth.
