Hi lovely people!!

I am so excited to show you today’s video! An introduction to the Cockney accent and dialect. This is part of a series of many videos about all the different British accents that can be found across the U.K! So keep your eyes open for that!

This will hopefully shed some light on why you find it difficult to understand natives, and why you struggle to understand series and films. There is a lot of diversity in accents coming from the U.K and it’s important to have an understanding of all of them in order to complete your studies and research when learning English.

Hopefully you’ll enjoy my attempts at doing the accent!

I hope you enjoy my video :-)

Let me know in the comments what you think?

Thanks for watching 😚😚

Interviews with the wonderful Michael Caine (great for your listening practice!!)

Films to hear the cockney accent:
My Fair Lady (Shows a great distinction between R.P and Cockney!)
Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (Jason Statham speaks in Cockney throughout the film!)

Professor Katharine, in my town there was a group of about 9 persons from the US. They gave English lessons for free in the town. I enrolled in. It turned out I could communicate with the native speakers on an excellent level on verious topics. It was my first meeting with the English native speakers face to face. Watching and analysing videos on your channel brought excellent effect.

Hello, Katharine.😊 Now I think I have to use my loaf in order to understand Cockney Accent. To me, Cockney Accent sounds pretty warm and friendly. Plus, Cockney Rhyming Slang sounds so creative and unique.
You're crushing it!👏Thanks a lot❗🤗

As an amateur linguist i have invented Cockney Non - Rhyming Slang for people that can't construct a rhyme. It's very simple.Take 2 non rhyming words - orange and hovercraft, for example, to link to the 3rd word - peanut, for example. There you have it - simples ! Just in case here's another example - curtain and milk = dog. One more for good measure now that you're getting the hang of it - gearbox and cup = coconut.Endlessly fascinating - have hours of fun with this brilliant new linguistic form !

Very funny & interesting british accent. Same as but different accent were used by britishers in british India during british rule. They were used mixed Indian & English language. For a "Table servant" they used a word "khidmudgaar". During 1857 to 1947, India is a second home for britishers. You can read about this in the book "Women of the Raj" by Margaret Macmillan.

Dear Katharine,
I note in the ‘little’, not only ‘t’ is glottal, but the ‘L’ is very heavy dark. Is the dark ‘L’ a distinctive part of the cockney way of speaking?

I am an Arab..and now I am learning the English language..I have learned the American accent and the British accent..If I were British, I would be proud of my accent..because it is the language of eloquence, statement, poetry, and literature.

' The Modern RP ' is the most important. That is what the England is known for! I'm not sure whether the Cockney or other varieties of accents of English will get the kind of attention and recognition the Modern RP gets! 🤔 For the convenience of the most of the people in the world, there has to be a standard language which can be used as global lingua franca! No wonder the English language enjoys that status! 😊

Hi Katharine, great video. Watching from Liverpool, Merseyside, born and bred here and have a very broad scouse accent that I can't shift for the life of me. In Liverpool we occasionally use Cockney Rhyming Slang (Brown Bread, Cream Crackered, Let's have a butchers etc). If I ever go down to London, I affectionately get called Denzel (after the only Fools and Horses Character).
