Came across your website, it's by far the best information I've found on trying to grow avocados. Lots of contrary information out there as far as advice about growing avos like those "this is how you transplant into the ground" videos that tell you to put in soil breaker and amendments and things that will turn your planting hole into a water sinkhole - they show you how they plant them but they never show you if their trees are still alive 2 years later. At least you have proof on your site on how your avos are thriving. Keep up the good work. I'm in North County btw...

Very interesting. I came here because I was thinking about growing a tree. I never realized that there was such a variety. Or that so much work was involved. I think I'll stick with store bought!

What’s the closest I can plant avocado trees next to each other? I would like to have multiple trees, but I have limited space.

Posted this on your website... Greg – I came across your site too late. I’ve had two holes prepared for two trees now – avocado and mango and I was getting my info from the antiquated “dig a hole and put in compost and amendments” and I have clay soil. One hole has good drainage – about 2 hours. One took 15 hours. I can dig out most of the half/half mix and refill with half native and the mix. Can I get away with putting a raised box and the avocado tree. I’d like the mango to go in the good spot as it has a deeper fuller root system but I’m afraid of killing my avocado in the clay hole. Thanks again, you are a saint in my book.

Hi Greg
I just got a 3 feet tall grafted Hass avocado tree as a gift. I am in San Jose Ca zone 9. You inspire me to have this tree. I am very excited. I just put it in ground 3 days ago. It has 4 baby avocados. The size of the trunk is 1.5 inches. I am not sure how old it is. The nursery told me to cut off the fruits so the tree would focus on growing the roots. Should I do that? It’s my first fruits tree so I am very nervous. Please help.

Hi, Greg. Very nice and informative video. Here from Tenerife, Spain. Question: as I see, you prefer micro sprinkler irrigation to drip irrigation. Why? I do also. Thanks in advance for your answer.

Hi there

I just happened to find you tonight, and I'm assuming from the video...that you're in So California...like me?,

I have a youngish avocado tree (not completely sure of the type) It seems to be growing pretty good, but it's kind of branching out in different dirrection and I was wondering how to prune it...or if that's what should be done? It seems to make tiny little "wannabee" avocado's, but they never really mature (it's almost as if the tree is practicing how to make fruit, when it eventually grows up)...lol

Anyways, I was wondering if it would be possible to send you a couple of pictures of my tree, so you could tell me what I should be doing...or not doing?

Please let me know, if you get the chance

Thanks~K~

Dude hard to find info on planting avo trees. Planted a Lamb Hass and a Fuerte in the soil here in San Clemente, CA. Soil is very clayey in my view. I dug down 5 feet and about 4 feet around. The trees are ten years old. I put gravel in the bottom of the hole and then filled with looser topsoil and dug a 1 foot deep and ten foot wide pan around the hole filled with the top soil. Just planted the trees the other day and have french drains in them, but just worried and feel like i should add dirt below the root ball and lift the trees up higher than ground level. Any thoughts? Dig your website used it a lot and i think u mentioned mounding for clay soil

My grandparents have one similar to your reed & it's not looking good this year. Top branches are drying up, leaves are falling of leaving bare branches at peak areas of the tree. Now around the trunk of the tree they have they have about 3 feet of mulch around the base of the tree, but my grandma has also big rocks also in the mix. encircled around the avocado tree are some big blocks of stone some use for edge gardens piled 3 high enclosing the trunk & mulch like a fort. And they have the rest of the area bricked off all around & beyond the tree, so there's actually no soil to see. Would this be some concern as to the well being of the avocado tree. I mentioned this to my grandparents but you know how older ones are, it's there way, what do I know, ha. I just recently removed a couple of bricks to dig to look at the soil, they had sand on top between brick & dirt. The soil was really compact & dry, nothing like your soil. Plus about 6 feet away they have a vine that's pretty much competing with the avocado tree as to size, but this vine wraps itself around whatever it's in contact with it looks like a boa constrictor all around, would this also be a concern.
