I run a 5/3/1 variation and deload after three (sometimes four), 3-week cycles. I'm also about to turn 53, live alone, and have designed my life in such a way that i dont have too many training interruptions (occasionally I have to move my Friday workout to Saturday). Sometimes I can tell that i need the rest, other times i just take it as a little insurance against injury.

I have two bum shoulders already. I don't like anything in the world more than lifting and, if taking five weeks off throughout the course of each year keeps me in the gym, i'm fine with that.

Also, I'm a data scientist. I'm willing to bet that I am in the top ten strongest data scientists in the world already.
