Deloads may not be physically beneficial but I do a 50% weight deload week every 12 weeks and mentally it helps me immeasurably. Resets me back to some clarity and focuses me to go HTLT for the next 12 weeks. I'll never stop doing it.

These studies are usually on people who are relatively new at lifting and weak who cant really even lift enough weight to cause any sort of significant fatigue

I want to also hear Mike Israetel's opinion on the matter.

I know from years of experience that deload weeks are absolutely central. I can feel my nervous system failing with numbness throughout the body and brain fog towards the end of a training block. If I don't do it, I fear I might black out. So this allows me to know how hard to push within the training block, without getting injured. 😅

I don't think I've ever heard a deload explained as 'a complete absence of exercise for a week'

I've always had a 6-8 weeks insanely hard training and after that I take 4-7 days off to recover properly and that's the way I've seen the best gains and increase in strength. When I start to feel like shit and mood is getting lower, It's sign I'm due for a short break. But I do 2 hours workouts full body, 5-6 times a week. It does eventually take a toll on the body.

"This guy ( some name) thinks invented commonsense." 😂 I am waiting to use it on someone in real life . 4:55

The whole point of Deloads are to mitigate systemic fatigue. You don't take a deload because your biceps are swore its because you cant push your body that hard every week. Deload does not mean you take the whole week off it means you stay away from failure and do a few less sets.

Deloads give the tendons, ligaments, joints a chance to reset. It’s a safety precaution for longevity.

A lot of deloads aren’t taking a week off, you just reduce load and volume to 50% for a week to have proper joint recovery if you’ve been pushing high volumes and close to failure. Plus the psychological benefits of a deload are very understated

Deloads are much more important in the long term, especially after you reach a relatively advance level and accumulate a lot of fatigue. Deloads, also called a taper are also very important for achieving high performance in important events like races.

To whoever is reading this keep going, you're doing fine! No matter how slow your progress each new week is filled with tiny steps forward. Be proud of yourself you got this!

If I understand correctly, this study focused on musle volume training. I always thought, that deloads are more important for strength training, since training for strength requires more rest and not to rest the muscles, but to rest the bones, tendons, ligaments...

I saw the title, And I immediately clicked because I've got to hear this one:).
I've been training for 27 years and I do not deload myself. To be perfectly honest, I didn't even know that was a thing until recently..lol
And I'm not against anyone who does, But I've never felt the need. And no, It's not because I train like a loser either..:)
I'm one of those guys that truly likes to bleed at the gym. I definitely have to reign in the intensity because I'm not 30 anymore😬
My "DELOAD" consist of, train when my body says it's time to train and do not train when my body says no to training. That's never a week off or even a light week. Let's say I've trained three days in a row and now I'm still recovering from all three of my workouts then I take a day off maybe 2 days off and then I come back immediately when my muscles and body has recovered And this is never ever been more than a 3 days.
I'm also one of those people that basically train to failure and past on at least 90% of my sets..

I'll keep watching in case something changes, but this study seems like shit within 60 seconds. 1 group took an entire week fully off resistance training in the middle of a 9-week block? That is not what a deload is.

I think that listening to your body is the best advice.

Deloads are good if your feeling tired or sore from gym. And if burnt out in general it works too.

This all depends on how many years of training you have under your belt. I do a ton of myoreps and myorep match sets. No way I can do this week after week without a deload.

I do agree that it’s all person specific and a planned deload doesn’t make sense. However, if you need a deload that doesn’t mean you’re a P word.

Having a planned deload first of all helps me push htlt beyond failure in the last week. After, I feel like I've been hit by a bus and extremely fatigued even when my muscles have recovered so a deload works for me.
