Fun Fact: during WWII, there was a German Defector named Hans.

Hans was a female Alsatian Shepherd, who pulled over 100 Ally troops out of the line of fire, while also saving over 100 Nazi troops in the same battle.

When she was accidentally shot, a temporary ceasefire took place, while field medics on both sides worked to save her life.

She did not survive, but receive posthumous awards from US, British, German, and French military forces, and her German handler was given a much lighter sentence after it was found he intentionally trained her to pull the wounded off the battlefield, 'without consideration for uniform or alliance'.

One of the unsung heroes of the Second Great War.

Fun fact, in ww1 there were Mercy Dogs who would do this, guiding medics to the wounded and guiding the wounded back. If a soldier was dying though, they'd sit with them and stay to comfort them till they passed

The UK has a Victoria Cross for animals and the stories are incredible. That I know of, it's been awarded to pigeons, dogs, horses, and a cat. My favorite story is of "Gandar", a Newfie dog who protected wounded Canadian soldiers during the Battle of Hong Kong on three separate occasions. Respect!!

I heard someone talking about Hans, but there was another war dog named Scruffy I think. They had helped detect mustard gas, find wounded soldiers, and warned his owner of bomb shells. He had survived 2 grenades and 1 mustard gas injury. He also learned how to salute officers with his owner, which is how he actually stayed on the battlefield.

My favorite scene from Star Trek is a huge ferocious Klingon asking a boy why he's crying. When being told that the boys dog just died, he tells the boy that then he must lead a good and honorable life so that he will be reunited with his dog in Sto Vo Kor (Klingon heaven you can only get into if you were honorable). When asked if dogs go to Sto Vo Kor he says there's more of them there than there are of us. There may have been better scenes in the Star Trek franchise, but none had me nodding in agreement as much as this one.

ETA: my head canon is now that Max will absolutely be listened to when deciding to keep someone out of any heaven, Klingon, Christian or otherwise.

There is literally a war dog section at an old pet cemetery by me in MI. The monument alone, for the Vietnam WD MEMORIAL is longer than a huge pick up truck. It’s heart breaking. The entire place left me speechless for hours.
