Slight correction! Knock Knock (2015) was technically her first American film, though War Dogs and Knock Knock shooting dates were very close to each other. De Armas learned her lines phonetically for both movies and it wasn't until being on set for War Dogs that it became apparent she needed to learn English. Which she did amazingly quick!

Tell people this story when they say “looks don’t matter, ”. They hired her for her looks, and even after they found out that she wasn’t the best candidate they jumped through hoops to get her eligible for the role.
