Walmart BLOCKED 20 million PS5 SCALPER BOTS! | 8-Bit Eric

8-Bit Eric ( 8BE ) Jerry Geisler, Walmart Global Tech's Chief Information Security Officer, writes that one of the preventative actions the company implemented just hours before the PlayStation 5 event on November 25 blocked more than 20 million bot attempts within the first 30 minutes alone.

Thank you Walmart...it's about damn time. I know my local Walmart got 16 PS5's a few days ago while I was grocery shopping. Seeing all those people lining up, knowing they have secured a PS5 warmed my heart. I even got a chance to speak with a few as I always peruse the game section. The one thing that did bother me was they appeared so...almost shell shocked.

A few attempted to cut me off with "Go away, there isn't anymore!" I basically laughed and showed them pictures of us (fiancee and I) holding our new consoles (Series X and PS5 *physical). I'm here for the games not your console buddy. Thankfully, most were very cool and I got to warn them about the Safe Mode bit. At any rate, I just hope every store starts doing what Walmart is and shuts down the scalping bastards...how I hate them.

Track sales by IP....limit 1 (maybe 2) sales per IP....anything beyond that gets cancelled....Scalpers are using friends/family addresses to get around the 1 per household limit....but limiting sales by IP address can assist in slowing down bots. Yes, it’s possible to spoof your IP by using a VPN, but that’s an extra step and probably would slow the bots down a bit. Even if it slows the bots by 50%, that’s a big hit. Maybe require people to verify purchase by phone number as well. Once you get one, you cannot get another one until you type in a code sent via text message. THAT would really slow down the bots. Same Phone number cannot be used more than twice perhaps? (Only reason I am allowing 2 is maybe someone is wanting to have 2 systems in their house? Or buy one for a Christmas gift for a family member and buy one for themselves?

That is excellent. I hope the tech Walmart used trickles down to less advanced retailers as bots are a huge problem and I don't think most sites know how to stop them. I suspect in some cases there are disincentives for retailers to do much about it though because I bet some have the view that they don't care who buys the product as long as they move it all as fast as possible.

That's great more companies need to be doing this. To allow more human people to get a chance a ps5 are xbox series X.

I wonder if they legit blocked that many Bot purchases or if they're just trying to salvage their reputation. I'm sure they see everyone referring to them as "Bot-Mart" and blasting them for being the worst retailer for these Consoles. If it is legit then good on them.

Says Walmart lol. The fact, is they don’t want scalper bots or average customers to buy consoles from their website. If that happened they’d be selling millions of consoles at cost or even a loss. What Walmart does want is for their “Marketplace” sellers to get their hands on as many consoles as possible. This way, their “Marketplace” sellers can sell consoles for over $1, 000 and they receive 8-20 %. They’re not dumb, but anybody who thinks that they are even attempting to sell consoles fairly is 🤣
