Some upcoming nations are going to be in Oceania, so I figured, why not do a quick "Oceania explained" video for future context? Also check out some of the previous Oceania videos we've done like Papua New Guinea, Marshall islands, or Palau! Which was your favorite?

7:22 Fun Fact, Kiribati actually renamed one of their islands to Millenium Island, because that island was the very first place to see the new Millenium.

Thanks Barbs, as a Melanesian I agree! There's not much said or known about the Melanesian peoples and our cultures. We are still a mystery but there are many of us who are researching it.

6:00 "A country inside of Micronesia, called Micronesia" Paul shrugged from his country inside of America, called America. xD

fun fact: new zealand used to be one island that was as tall as the east coast of the usa and about three times as wide as it is today. It possibly was connected to Australia. However, at some point, sea levels rose and sunk most of New Zealand and left behind what we see of New Zealand today.

Oceana's history is so interesting. It's like Caribbean on steroids and way more secluded from the rest of the word

I'm an Australian and have been binge-watching your videos about Oceania (and Indonesia and Timor-Leste). It's great learning about my neighbours and the continent in, I know so much about Europe and Middle East but not my own backyard...but our brothers and sisters across the Pacific are so interesting themselves! Keep up the great work mate

About melanesia, the name comes from the Greek word "μελανος" =melanόs which means "dark colour, close to black". Hence the name of a region where the people have dark skin .

It's a good thing that the emus haven't invaded any more nations.

Oceania also has a lost continent.
It's called zelandia and is under water and at one time was above the water.

It would have been half the size of Australia and be the biggest island in the world.

Barbs, have you ever considered re-recording the first countries of the series? I feel that you improved a lot on the format of the videos and I would love to see some countries with the better production plus presenters that joined after. And I say this as a Brazilian who would appreciate a longer episode because of the size of the country and how much diversity we have here :)

I’m 16 now and I’ve lived 12 years in Melanesia (specifically Fiji for 8 years, Vanuatu for 1 and Papua New Guinea for 3 and a half) and the people are the best. I now moved back to Europe but I miss it every day. If you ever have the chance, please visit Fiji cause Fijians are the most kind hearted loving people in the world (also please visit so the tourism industry can stay alive after covid)

Damn Barby, you actually mentioned the whole bit about Rotuma being Polynesian. Thoroughly impressed. Thanks!
