How to Create and Use Hierarchies in Tableau

If you don't have a hierarchy set up in your data already you can manually build it so let's say I want region and category to be in a hierarchy region is already within the location hierarchy so I'm going to duplicate it as a copy

Now I can add this copy of region into a hierarchy by going down to hierarchy and create hierarchy we'll just call this region category click ok I can also take category it's also part of the product hierarchy already so I'm going to take a copy by duplicating and let's add category to the hierarchy I want it to be in region category

Now I can drag region onto the view the copied version

And I get the hierarchy as a note in Tableau desktop dates are always hierarchies so if I grab order date and put it on rows it defaults to year I can click on the plus sign to go to quarter and then month and then day even though it doesn't look like date is in a hierarchy dates come in hierarchies by default
