One of their songs says "I'll take all the chords from this song, and take the words from that other song" so they aren't hiding it

*"I think that I'll just borrow.. all the chords from that song and all the words from that other song I heard yesterday.."* The Strokes, Electricityscape.

Oscar Wilde on plagiarism: "When I see a monstrous tulip with four petals in someone else's garden, I am impelled to grow a monstrous tulip with five wonderful petals, but that is no reason why someone should grow a tulip with only three petals."

Most if not all music across all genres are always influenced by older songs, some artists ripp songs entirely and just change the key or add an extra note. The Strokes at least add their own sound to them.

Eternal summer and bad decisions are officially sampled tracks. The original composers' name are also credited as a co-composer in their album credits.

I don't care. It's my favorite and the best band in the world. Period. Nobody can change my mind.

I'd say more inspired imitators than thieves. I feel like they are just inspired by songs & riffs they love. They seem to use it to spark new art, new lyrics etc. It can get a but close to the mark though, but it's good they are honest and credit ppl, like Billy Idol etc
Anyone know if they ever credited or mentioned Mana - "El Muelle De Sanblas" being inspiration for AHJnr's Strokes song "One Way Trigger" (which also uses that AHA riff from "Take On Me")? It's like they give a nod & a wink to songs of the past, which I guess is good that it then sends younger fans on a discovery mission of good bands and songs eg Sonic Youth, Tom Petty.

Imitate or steal, the thing The Strokes does best is elevate

He literally gave credit to Billy Idol in bad decisions at the end.

All artists do it, few are transparent and fair about it, makes me love them more👍

even with all of these they are the best band of the last 30 years, and even longer in my opinion. the songs are still original and completely stand on their own. and giving publishing credit is the right thing to do so I have no complaints.

One section of a strokes song is literally not enough they constantly pack like two or three different songs into a single song

From the very beginning the band has spoken of their influences with praise. Even their look back then (skinny ties and blazers remind me of The Beatles, Converse sneakers and leather jackets remind me of The Ramones).

I think(?) This is called sampling and tons of artists do it, and these guys are some of the best at it imo
