Professor Snape would approve of all these punishments.

"Oh, nothing. He's my son; I don't want to be accused of favoritism."
" 'nks, dad..."

Wouldn't he still be showing favoritism by putting his son in his favorite punishment?

If I were a Victorian kid, I will be happy to get suspended on the roof, in "The Cage".

1:10 "Good. You're learning!"

Which is the whole point of a school.

And this was the best conditions for Victorian kids, school children actually had it the best in Victorian times compared to the child laborers in the factories, mills, and coal mines

Is it just me, or does the cage sound like a really awesome punishment to get?

I love the little side-comments like "Victorians really did cane children!" Aren't they infamous for that?

"Jenkins, you can sit back down now."
"Thank you, Sir."
"What? You CAN sit down? I obviously haven't beaten you enough, boy!"

I don't get how people thought it was ok to make kids suffer in the Victorian era.

When I was a kid... we had this aging weirdo of a teacher who occasionally threatened to, 'Hang (us) by the rafters!'. Always wondered where the hell he even came up with that! Now I know!

To anyone saying something like "ahh the good old days when children were respectful." Or "if we did this today there wouldn't be less spoiled brats." Maybe it did work, maybe it would work today, but it shouldn't matter. Our society needs to try and find ways to encourage good behavior, not discourage bad behavior. Call it positive reinforcement if you want. Just like I'm sure if we brought back hanging for any crime as sever as or worse than stealing $50+ crime would significantly decrease. No one advocates for that though, because we know its wrong, and instead some prisons offer ways for non-lifers to gain valuable skills so they don't have to return to crime.

If the kids spoiled beating them won't change anything. Not letting them win in a tantrum will, forcing them to find socially acceptable ways to get what they want, and except that sometimes they can't get it at all. A much better lesson, than "if you throw a fit you'll get smacked."

Also what gives a teacher the right to hit a kid. They don't pay for the child's food, clothing, and shelter. They didn't raise the child from an infant. They don't know if the child is acting out because of being a brat, or because they have some sort of condition, such as ADHD. Maybe something is happening at home. They see this kid from 1-6 hours, depending on the level. (Elementary or secondary education). Or another theory that -God Forbid- an immature child is acting immature.

At home, parents have a duty to raise their child to meet at least some of societies standards and helping them learn to one day take care of themselves. Parents have every right to spank or whip, or slap, a child for whom NOTHING ELSE IS WORKING or even as a way to rapidly discourage an dangerous behavior. Although sometimes letting the kid burn their fingers on the stove, has more teaching value than telling them not to touch. But think of abuse both physical and mental- but mostly physical. Lots of it is slapping, spanking, hitting... The same ways non abuse parents can disabling. It's no wonder that many people don't agree with hitting as a punishment. This by the way doesn't mean that all parents who use physical discipline are abusers, nor are all abusers physical.

Ok, I'm done. I would now like to point out that: yes, you are entitled to your own opinions no matter how moronic they are. I'm in the US which has free speech protected by the 1st amendment. The country that your in most likely has it to. Therefore I ALSO have the right to my opinions, no matter what you think of them. Please remember that before calling me names, and cursing at me. (Which I hope won't happen, but this IS YouTube). Please do respond reasonable - I'd love a good debate.

I blame any misspellings in Apple's stupid autocorrect.

The cage doesn't sound so bad, unless you're scared of heights.

"Thanks Dad." LOL, that reminds me of my dad. He's a teacher, too. Not so brutal though.

Not so fun fact: If a child smudged a word, they were caned on the hand so they smudged it even MORE! And then, they got the cane again and again.
