In this video we look at creating a local CentOS 6.3 mirror server so that updates and software install can be perfomed locally. You would not need that many servers or desktops locally to make this a worthwhile effort. Allowing you to have centralized version control of updates to you Linux machines. First we set up the mirror server using rsync to create local copies. With that is place we configure the clients yum reopsitory to point to the local mirror.

You've managed to present something intelligently and concisely without adding any fluff - not even something as popular as cbtnuggets can do this properly. Well done!

Yes. I have noticed that applications like VLC want to point at a device like /dev/cdrom and on some of my machines these are different types like "DVD" or "BluRay". One of the burning applications has a similar setting for the default burning device. I will have a look at this udev directory, and hopefully the entries are not too complicated to figure out.

Thanks!

If I could ask a somewhat unrelated question that I thought of while watching you create symbolic links - Let's say you have an optical device and you want a custom symbolic link to the device and call it "/dev/BluRay". It creates via the usual "ln" command, but on reboot this goes away because "/dev" is not a standard filesystem. I've seen distro's do this with "cdrom" and similar links, and I was just wondering where they generate these custom links on boot where they are permanent?
