John, no the Dark Knight did not miss based on timing. It was influential in effecting the rule change. The next year the academy changed the format to allow more films nominated. The Dark Knight not being nominated was instrumental in the academy re-thinking it's rules in response to the outcry that the Dark Knight was so popular, and critically acclaimed to not nominate it was a crime. The academy in particular did not want to be seen so out of touch. When people think of great movies from the last ten years, they think of the Dark Knight. And I think it is the worst snub in modern film history. At least it effected some positive ripples. (Bump Affleck down to #2)
