Butterfly - Eyes Up

Sometimes teaching great butterfly means keeping the swimmer shallow rather than pressing deep.

Why do it:
A shallow press on butterfly can help to increase rate by creating less amplitude in the stroke, plus it can help build the ability to breathe on every stroke.

How to do it:
1 - Have the swimmer look slightly forward as the hands enter the water.
2 - When the body rises on the recovery of the stroke, have the swimmer lift their eyes just above the surface on ALL strokes, breathing and non-breathing strokes.

How to do it really well (the fine points):
The goal is to create the most similar stroke possible, whether you’re breathing or not. It’s also to make sure you’re not diving the head down into the water so far that it takes you too long to come back up. Try to create a rhythm with the stroke, and a head position that allows you to feel like you’re bouncing the chest down the pool. Enjoy.

Thanks. I teach the press with the chest and head low. This makes perfect sense. Trying to keep the non breathing and breathing strokes the same. Thanks 👍🏻👍🏻💪🏼💪🏼

I wish it were that easy to swim a high tempo fly. I find no matter what I do, I have to lift a lot to breathe, then come crashing down afterwards, which really slows down the next catch phase.

Confusing..are you advocating breathing every stroke or every other stroke?

Shallow pull or shallow fly? Because they're completely different results. I teach to dive deeper because it means the water pushes the swimmer up to breathe.

I know it's technically not correct but I've challenged many people to give me a single drill to stay shallow And breathe (full stroke, withiut fins) and none of them work :-(

The best video on youtube if you want to learn Butterfly (with ease) is *"a Shaw way to fly"*

The stroke may not be as streamlined or as fast but it's easier, and that's what people want.

Your welcome everyone
