It’s actually safer to be with the lifers.
They are serving there time. Most won’t get their hands dirty, unless provoked (or paid) They really don’t want to bother you, extort you maybe.
People awaiting arraignment are much more volatile. That’s why you see more fights in jail than in prison.

Just my opinion, I’ve been to both, and found prison much more chill believe it or not.
