One minor correction: the stone is not just any quarried stone (and it certainly isn't granite). It is either limestone or has a high limestone content mixed in. The reason is that as the giant grinding drums crush the stone, the massive energy from that process becomes heat (like rubbing your hands together) and actually causes the same chemical reaction in the limestone dust as happens in a cement kiln. So when it gets tamped down and wet, it's not just settling. It's an actual chemical reaction of hydration, so the larger gravel pieces are weakly cemented in place, which brings better performance than plain old gravel.

Have had a C/R driveway for about 26 years because where I worked at the time I bought the house the Co President at the time let me have it for 20 or 25 dollars for roughly 14 to 18 tons each time I would add to it so I couldn't pass it up but it does encourage grass and weeds in the summer from the lime in it but it does hold up well with cars and pickup trucks.

what if you dig to deep or the soil is to soft say 4 feet deep soft where you would place your foundation. what id you use crusher run, packing in layers of say every 6 inches coming back up 3 feet. so, so the foundation would have say a base 3 feet deep 6 feet wide, could you build on that? could you now put an 18 x 24 inch foundation on that foe a single story wood frame house? footing.

How is drainage for crusher run? I'm looking at installing artificial turf and using this as the base. The artificial turf will be in a boxed area with no overhead covering of any type so rain will get to it. I'm worried about drainage and pooling. Just wondering if crusher run under artificial turf will have adequate drainage.

Good info, thanks.
Id be curious about the various types of crusher run, also if a coarse rock should be put on top before the concrete is poured, or if concrete can go directly on the crusher run.
Thanks

Wish Dirk would have called this a "best practice " approach and called anything else exactly what it is...a shortcut.
Never saw concrete placed on bare earth until coming to North Carolina; no stone nor even a vapor barrier.
Also, have never seen a residential concrete contractor ever taking the time to address verification of concrete quality from a ready-mix truck or the concrete curing process.
But hey, all these players have a license to operate and are more than willing to take your money.

They figure the majority of those renting houses, are too stupid to realize the shortcuts being taken and the general contractors sure don't give a s**t.
And by the time a problem arises, those concrete cowboys have ridden into another sunset. Yippekiay concrete !!
