DIY Guitar Magnet: Under $9

I've been trying to figure out a way to get a closer shot of my picking hand for videos on this channel, and for myself while I'm working on my own picking technique.

Troy Grady has a great device he calls a Magnet that's not available to the public, and won't be until around 2021. I thnk his device will be great, and I'm looking forward to buying one when they're available. It will be a much more elegant device than this, but until it's available this is a quick DIY version I made for myself.

I took an $8 quick clamp from a hardware store that I already had in my garage and a rubber hair tie from my wife. Just as good at The Magnet? No, but it will do the trick for me until I can buy a Magnet.

I contacted the Troy team a few days ago and they are still finalizing the sending of magnets for those who participated in the financing. So I decided to try your solution and it works perfectly. I replaced the elastic band with a small Irwin clamp, It's very stable, easy to adjust the shooting angle, safe and quick to install. Thanks Nick.

This looks great! Since it's been a couple of years since you posted this, you might not get my response. But, it would be very helpful if you could showcase your clamp a little slower, and - maybe - include a still shot, or two. Also, is it still working for you, and, how's your practicing coming along? Nice idea, I’ve used Velcro instead of a band, easier to get on and off.

This is probably better than the Troy magnet! I bought one of his and they’re horrible.
