Actually works pretty well to streamline workflow. I usually end up with a hundred layers and getting lost in my work because something looks off and the only way to edit it is to paint over it.

It's something I shouldn't be struggling with, but everything I do comes with an organized mess.

You’re the first person who has finally talked about complementary colors of light and shadow!! It always seems to be ignored or overlooked by self-taught artists and all over the internet. Instant follow, you know your stuff man.

I've never thought of dividing the hair like that, but it makes so much sense!

Using the page assist to move between layers is brilliant!!! I only used it for animation 😭

love the vid and great tips but the lighting colours are actually determined differently i think?
Hilights are the colour of the light source, shadows the colour of the surrounding area and bounce light the colour of the surface it is bouncing off of. Thats why typically you have yellow/warm light and blue/purple shadows as thats the colour of the sun and the sky.
anw great job ^^

I usually use the symmetry tool to draw because I draw my characters facing the front with their full face showing, so it makes it easier for me. Recently I've been trying to do shading with different shades instead of just black. Would shading look weird for characters that are just facing straight forward, or is there a certain position you would recommend for shading? Recently I've been trying to do shading with different shades instead of just black, so are there any shading colors you would recommend? Greetings from Spain ❤

Thank you! I need the detailed uses like multiply, screen etc

My notes:
1. Sketch
2. Clean lines (fix that's wrong with your sketch)
3. Flat colors (add layers)
4. Local Colors (add gradients)
5. Shadow (light direction, use multiply)
6. Highlight ( put in middle and do screen mode, and use complementary colors- opposite)
7. Over paint (new layers to make your portrait really pop)

Thank you for actually making it CLEAR and not doing that thing where the tutorial skips from flat colours to finished rendering in 1 step

Where I struggle is getting to that point where I don't need the clean line work layer. My flat colors go beneath and when I get rid of the lines it looks odd. Then I feel like I just need to add more line work. On top of the color
