.... and then the hiring manager just tells you to apply the way they explicitly told you. I don't think they have the time to sit around making new friends. A better idea is to read the entire ad first to make sure that easy apply is even the correct way to apply. Often I find that the ad says that you're actually supposed to apply through some person's email address instead of linked in.

terrible advice - the hiring manager is going to be frustrated and usually won't give you the time of day. Far better to easy apply with the correct buzzwords in your cv and then write a message saying you applied
