Plot Vs Story

In this brief video, the first in a series on narrative and narration, I explain the difference between plot and story. The definition I'm using is drawn from David Bordwell and Kristen Thompson, who themselves draw their definition from the Russian formalist concepts of syuzhet (plot) and fabula (story).

This channel is criminally underrated 😑

God, I love your channel. I think you’re up there with folks like Adam Ragusea and Contrapoints as one of the best educational creators. So simple, so professional, your content is a treasure.

I think this video is wrong about the definition of plot and story according to the sources it cites. In fact, it's story (fabula) that shows the chronological and causal relationship among a series of events. But this video argues that the opposite is true: that the plot shows the chronological and causal relationship among the events of the narrative. It's actually the plot (syuzhet or sujet), not the story, that can be told out of order.

And here is a video that uses the same source to make a different conclusion about the definition of plot and story:

I haven't yet read the original sources he cites, but either Wikipedia and few other educators are wrong or he is sorely mistaken.
