Having people around you who are encouraging also helps combat this insecurity. After underperforming at school (just lazy and uninterested) I became interested in Physics and Maths later, and was lucky to have work colleagues who suggested I did a degree as a mature student (distance learning in spare time), then suggested a PhD as a natural progression (I didn't even know what a PhD was!).

This is another data point to motivate learning the history of one's subject of interest.
A lot of really smart people worked really hard to create/discover knowledge that is now wedged between the covers of textbooks and presented in a magical, self-evident manner. Learning about our predecessors' challenges makes our own struggles more human.

Great video! I remember having similar insecurity when I started university. I went for Math but was afraid of not being smart enough. I took some computer science courses and fell in love with them. More than 10 years later, I still love computer science, and it seems that I was always meant to be a computer scientist.

Continue this office hours series definitely, sorcerer! Also Konrad Knopp's Theory of Functions is an excellent book!

I used to have a lot of fears too. I thought all my classmates are better than me. I was afraid to ask my professor questions because I thought my questions are stupid. I was under the huge pressure. But one day I saw your video and you said you think understanding 60% in the class is a success. I relaxed and realised not only me can’t understand some classes. Now I do better and better. When I feel confused, I will come to this channel to find some peace. Thanks a lot.

Incredible story!!!! I think that not letting your fears stop you has a lot to do with your mindset. Instead of thinking "i don't wanna fail that test" think " i wanna pass that test. It's the same thing but two different perspective and it has helped me remain calm and focused in math. This will help you to study hard and with a relaxed mind.

This is literally me. I just took organic chemistry and hated chemistry but I didn’t feel smart enough to be in physics or math. But I took a class in bioinformatics and biophysics and absolutely loved it. I’m now going to my first semester as a physics major and I’m scared to death but I love math and physics since I was 10 years old but just never applied myself. I’m glad I’m not alone in my journey

I really like all the advice you give to the people writing you emails. You should study psychology because you seem to know so much about learning Mathematics and about people in general. Have a wonderful day :)

Crazy how accurate your statement is of France. It is true your study field is basically conditioned by an exam. He got acceptance into a chemist school but not a math school, and went on from there

True I love these math fears overcome from both persons who have taken different paths who have overcome fears in math and realize that you can be smart in other fields other than math and still be successful with out being a math major— Larry from Alabama

I’ll be beginning college in the fall and I really want to study math but I’m in a similar situation where I chose computer science when I know very little about it. I believe I’d like to double major but I think time will tell

We don't fear the unknown, we separation. - (the late) Dr. Jerry B. Harvey Jr.
It's not that we're scared to venture into learning new things, we fear rejection if we're wrong. We build and dwell upon negative fantasies.
