I had 2 classmates get into Harvard with only 3.8 and 3.75, 6 AP classes and 32 and 33 on ACT. Their service and extracurriculars were extraordinary though.

Outstanding applications are seen as marketing tools. If you are successful after graduation then they look good as a school and can take credit for you success in their recruitment tactics. All society needs to hear is “they went to Harvard.” And instant marketing. Even though these people are already pretty effing smart and enterprising and hard working before attending Harvard

Used to be so jealous of these kind of students. But now I’m studying abroad in a small Japanese university and enjoying a slow living! Just accepted that I’m average and there’s nothing wrong about that. Be grateful and thankful everyday :)
