People have been making the connection between the moon’s phases and the menstrual cycle for centuries. But when it comes to controlling periods, we may have been looking at the wrong thing in the sky.

That's my favorite thing to respond to people when they say "Could [x amount of people] be wrong?" is just "Yes"

Moon doesn't control my period. My period controls the moon.

Period IS called "The moon coming" in my language. It's pretty interesting that many cultures also relates menstrual cycles and the moon cycles.

The moon controls my cycle? Pure lunacy. 🤣

Can't speak for others, but no for me. My cycle does what it wants. Been at it for over 30 years now, and if the moon acted like my cycle, people wouldn't know what to expect.

I'm friends with a guy who I had to explain to that not all women have their period during the full moon. He had been married to his wife for several years at that point.

Also if our periods were linked to the moon, wouldn’t that make every menstruating person in the world get their period at the same time😭 that would be wild

the problem is that we evolve over some 100 thousand's years where we didn't had electricity and we would have been much more affected by lunar cycle in those condition, so those modern study realy don't tell us much..

my brain accidentally misread this as "Does your time of the month control the moon?"

Aristotle's explanation for menses occurring during the Moon's waning because the phase was 'colder, more humid' comes from Aristotelian physics / the cosmological view that the humid / wet elements yielded growth. Hot / dry elements, on the other hand, did the opposite.

0:37 the Rotary Dial design choice for the menstrual cycle was a really neat touch!

Before other types of calendars were invented, using the moon phase to keep track of about when to expect to start menstruating was probably just a very convenient coincidence. You can lose the bone you were notching days into or whatever, or forget to cut the notch one day, but you're not gonna lose or forget the moon. The cultural associations seem like really useful memory aids to remember that the moon will be more or less the same phase as last time you bled, and if humans across cultures all love to do anything it's create narrative systems to help us remember useful information about our health and environment! That seems like a more likely origin of this cultural idea to me than actually thinking it controls our menstrual cycles - it's just a helpful way to keep track of the days.

If they were really linked, the lunar calendar would be a bag full of dice

This reminds of the debate of: correlation and causation
That we correlate data, all the time. It's like the string and evidence board connecting things.
However, facts are what causation is about. When we use the scientific method to create hypothesis, then with tests, we see repeatable events. That something caused another thing to happen.
