The biggest difference between defending an atheistic position from a theistic position is that an atheist doesn't have to claim certain things are true -- when it has never been shown these things ARE true. But theists do this constantly.

As a Christian, I really value this honest and nuanced take. Too many Christians desperately want there to be "good guys" and "bad guys"! That's simply not how people work.

Well, if you mean by "Smart" that Atheists don't believe in FAIRY TALES, then Yes, Yes we are.

When your answer begins and ends with, “god did it, ” any person with any further, truthful, explanation is 100% smarter

Atheist walk is a fun concept.
Last atheist walk I had was when some door to door Mormons bothered me while I was walking my dog, it blew their minds when I said i was an antitheist and even if their god was real it's a monster and I'd be it's enemy.

I think its a question of ego. A theist looks at the world and thinks that all of that beauty must be made for him. An atheist looks at it and wonders what processes brought that beauty about, because they certainly weren't put there for him.

admitting you don't have all the answers is smarter than making up answers to feed your insecurities

I'm an atheist and have been for 30 years. I truly do not believe I am more intelligent than most believers as I'm confident I fall right in the standard grouping of intelligence. What I do think, and I'm proud of, is that I was willing to use critical thinking to examine what I believed and why and then be willing to follow the evidence.

Honestly I do think I’m smarter. But, I honestly think believers are dishonest with themselves. They have to much invested and can’t let go

I was, as all babies, born an atheist and have stayed that all my life (I'm now 61). I happen to be quite intelligent, but I don't think that has got much to do with anything. Critical thinking and scepticism have.

Now I’m not.

There is a negative correlation between education and religiosity. There are tons of smart theists though. The issue is religious indoctrination and the minimal effort to truly examine their own beliefs. To use the same rationality they used for Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny, Leprechauns, and religious characters and stories they don't worship. To learn about how religions before and after have stood on each others shoulders to merge and fine tune their stories to fit their beliefs and appeal to a more "modern" and/or wider audience. To see how location plays a larger factor on religious belief than the stories themselves. To file the man-made holy book(s) in the same categories as Homer, Virgil, Ovid, Hubbard and Tolkien. To overcome the fear of Pascals wager, apostacy, and to understand that heretics aren't burned at the rate they use to. To realize the scientific method, like pliers, is just a tool used to pry open the cork that prevented our understanding of the universe from flowing and that we as a society have gained orders of magnitudes more in the last few centuries since its invention than in the thousands of years prior. And the single biggest hurdle to overcome is to learn the phrase, "I don't know" and to mean it.
