How did scoring an own goal actually help a team to win a match?

In the CONCACAF, the rules had been changed to award two goals for a goal in extra time. Barbados had a unique way to reach that point.

The second I heard it's Jack Warner I had no doubts this will be sketchy.

Fun fact; although they took an early lead, Grenada were actually going into this match in a rather comfortable position, where they actually didn't need to win-- they could qualify for the knockout stage via goal difference even if they lost by one goal. This meant that, after the own goal was scored, Grenada could advance by scoring on either goal: either to make it 3-2 in their favour, or to make it 2-3, losing but basically guaranteeing their progression via goal difference by ending the match 1 goal down and avoiding the double golden goal bs they'd have to deal with in extra time.

Barbados caught on to this pretty quick though, and were able to successfully defend both goals for the final 3 minutes of the match to take it to extra time. And the rest is history.

Only in this football match you can see a team defending both goals at the same time

And Jack Warner never had a single bad idea after that day…The end

Grenada actually could have lost 1-0 and still went through on gd. So after the own goal they were trying to score into both nets because they wanted the game to end. So Barbados were defending both goals for about 4 or 5 mins. Grenada were probably anxious about conceding the golden goal

Also don’t forget the 1998 Tiger Cup where both teams (Thailand and Indonesia) had both qualified and the winner played the “stronger” Vietnam, so Effendi (Indonesia) scored an own goal so that they played the weaker Singapore. Poor Effendi was banned from football for life 😂

You left out the best part of this mess:
Grenada caught up on what Barbados was doing, and proceeded to attempt to score on either goal.
Barbados also caught up to their plan quickly, and went to defend both goals with all they had. They succeeded, and went on to win on ET.

Corruption is Jack Warner’s middle name

Granada weren’t smart enough to kick the ball in their own net to always keep the scores level or within a goal difference

even funnier, in the remaining time, barbados were defending BOTH goals, and grenada tried to score in either one.

Incorrect title. An own goal did not help them win the match. It helped them qualify to the knockout round...

The second I heard own goal helped a team I smirked and knew “the gears would start to turn for Granada “
