Basically you don't spill beer on a violin, but do a fiddle..

It's easy to remember the difference. You fiddle on a fiddle and you violence on violins.

And, yes, this joke was funnier in my head.

I love this channel, I always learn new things! I knew Violins and Fiddles were the same, but I didn't know that "classical musicians" were inspired by folk music! How cool is that?

Yeah, i get ask this all of the time. It just comes down to what and how you play it.

Some fiddles will have a flatter bridge to play double stops more efficiently, but thats more of a individuals style than the instrument. Some fiddle bows will have courser hair too. again, down to the musicians preference. All of these preferences can be applied to a classical tune as well. Some people will have 2 violins with different set ups to play certain tunes. even classic music has a technique where you play 3 strings at once that is way easier on a flattened bridge.

I thought fiddle was just another name for it? I thought the difference was context. I'm a guitar player and there's so many variants of the guitar, but at its core its still the same instrument.

Well... Double stops were probably invented concurrently between folk musicians and more scholarly musicians. Its unfortunate how well defined the line has gotten between the two, when 800 or 1000 years ago there probably wouldn't be an intelligible difference

My FIL always says the difference is "you can spill beer on a fiddle"

Welp, I hate that I of all people have to settle this debate, but here we are. See, violins have STRINGS. Fiddles, however, they got STRANGS.

Wait.. is the difference between a fiddle and a violin the same as a steel stringed guitar and a vinyl stringed one?

The only difference between a fiddle and a violin is one goes in a sack and one goes in a case
At least that what my pop use to tell me
