My uncle made these for the space shuttle. His shop was on Long Island and he would deliver them in person just to make sure they were not damaged. He passed before the shuttle stopped launching so another person makes them for the last flights.

Out of context it's weird to design parts so that they fail reliably. However those are very useful in aviation and space exploration! I'm glad this was suggested to me, i was looking for a good explaination on how exactly those work!

I just read an article about an X-15 flight that created enough heat to detonate three of the four explosive bolts holding a hypersonic model attached to the aircraft. I see now why that happened, thanks for the great explanation.

Nog: Self sealing stem bolts could be incredibly lucrative in the future.
