Lockdown 3 - Driving tests and driving lessons suspended across UK

If you had a driving test booked in January 2021 then it will be rebooked for later in 2021, most likely around May/June although it does depend on where you live. These tests will be given priority with any new slots being allocated to you before they are able to be booked by anyone else. If you already have a test booked later in the year such as March/April then yours will not be cancelled to make way for others.

Theory test certificate expiry dates will not be extended so if your theory test expires before the third lockdown ends then you'll have to take it again. The DVSA has repeatedly said since March that they will not extend them under any circumstances for learner drivers. I know this is annoying and I don't agree with it but I said don't bother signing petitions because that is an exercise in futility. People have been doing it since March 2020 and it has got nowhere.

January 12th 2021 update - It looks very likely that driving tests and lessons will not be resuming until April at the earliest. The lockdown here in the UK has been given an expiry date of March 31st which doesn't mean it will last until then but it could if needed. Even if we come out of lockdown in mid-February we will then be going back into tiers with most of the UK likely to enter the top tier in which driving tests and lessons will not be allowed. We are not just going to suddenly go back to doing lessons and tests any time soon, especially with the vaccine being rolled out so quickly. It would be foolish to throw away all that we have achieved by just opening everything back up and ending up in yet another lockdown.

I'm gutted that in England, I can't be practicing with friends or family, not even on essential journeys like food shopping. 😭

When will driving lessons resume? The 3rd UK lockdown will last until at least mid-February but it may be much longer until lessons return. The PM has said that we will return to a tier system once the lockdown ends and most parts of the UK will most likely fall into the top tier. Even lower tiers are likely to be toughened up as there is now yet another strain of the virus which needs controlling. This timetable also fits in with the extension of the furlough scheme until the end of April and the target of having the vaccination rolled out by the end of April. The way things currently look, I expect driving lessons to resume in March in only a few parts of the UK with more parts resuming lessons in April.

When will driving tests resume? If your test is cancelled then it's likely to be booked around 5 months from its original date. Driving test centres will most likely open 2 weeks after lessons resume to give people time to practise driving before taking a test.

Stay safe down there in Birmingham Paul, hopefully the snow hasn’t been too bad, apologies if comment isn’t related to video you’ve just posted. More likely we’ll see more speeders back on roads again breaking limits being nuisances, just like previous lockdown when cars were clocked going down A1 100 odd mph. I know it’ll be annoying with all this stop start malarkey but the govs doing what they think is right to keep everyone safe. I bet it’s driving you up the wall!!! Take care
