⚠️ PLEASE READ THE LIVESTREAM GUIDANCE HERE: ⚠️

⚠️ As I see questions, I’ll do my best to answer in the order they appear. However, if someone gives a "super chat" or “super sticker” with a question, their question becomes a priority and moves to the front of the queue. Channel members will also receive priority.
⚠️ Because I have a limited amount of time, if I miss a super chat question this week, it will be answered at the beginning of my next livestream next week.
⚠️ Your super chat/sticker is a donation that I appreciate very much.
⚠️⚠️ I’m answering YouTube questions to give actionable tips you can use to become a better gardener. While I have many years of gardening experience and training, please understand that every garden is different and my suggestions may not be the best action for your garden. I encourage you get information from other sources too.

Busy day missed the live, sure glad I'm watching this evening. Gardening with in ground beds that were mulched over winter. Was great removing the mulch to see the soil in the spring. Many more worms!

There’s also a problem that when you bury organic matter into the soil, the organic material is trapped and releases gases that can cause root rot and even kill the plant, permeability is the oxygenation of soil (sand, silt, clay aka loam soil) the organic material should always be on top of the soil, some plants can handle growing in compost but some do not, often compost in the beginning is good oxygen levels but as it breaks down it compacts and oxygen levels drop, that’s why compost is usually only good for about 6 months. Soil scientists say good loam soil actually has zero organic matter in it, in nature the organic material is on top about 5 inches deep. Cheer Gardener Scott, Salute!

Hi Gardener Scott! The 2 things is water retention and permeability, fun fact; the final product of completely decomposed organic matter is water and carbon monoxide, and a few minerals. Not much is left, lol. Cheers!

What are the best times to add organic matter? Spring? Fall? How do manures come into play? I’m kind of leery of using manures.

I got off work and appeared about 20 minutes late... I just went back and watched the best part of this episode where you talked about breaking down the cow for the hamburger diet... that is a FANTASTIC analogy!! I may have to borrow that one day!

What nutrients was your soil missing after the first time you did a soil test? Your soil amending regimen seemed pretty comprehensive.

Do we really need to buy expensive little bags of microbes, fungi, and other things for soil?
