#IP #Address #Management playlist explains the need for and methods used for managing IP addresses. Follows closely with the lesson on IP Addressing in the "Routing" section of the course.

We've learned that every computer on the Internet is required to have an IP address. Addresses are required in order for computers to find each other, but there was one big problem with IP addresses - they were not easy to remember.

A better system was needed to allow people to easily remember how to reach a specific computer. The solution was to allow users to assign names to the computer in addition to addresses. This made it easier to remember how to contact the computer.

This is accomplished the same way we do with phone numbers. For example, if you don't know a friend's phone number, you can look it up in a phone book or call information. Your friend's name is matched to a number. The same capability is available for computer addresses and names on the Internet. Devices called Domain Name Servers, or more commonly DNS servers, accomplish this. These servers keep track of a computer's name, called a domain name, and match it to the computer's IP address. When a computer name needs to be translated to an IP address, a DNS is used. DNS servers are used on the Internet and on corporate networks.
