봄꽃 3~4일 일찍 핀다...서울 개나리 3월 24일
South Korea's national weather agency says spring flowers this year are going to bloom a few days earlier than usual.
Kim Cheong-ah has the details.
Forsythias signal the beginning of spring in Korea...and the climate in February and March has an effect on when they bloom.
If average temperatures are high, flowers tend to bloom earlier but if the cold weather persists, blooming dates are pushed back.
This year is estimated to be comparatively warmer than the average year.
"There will be two to three sporadic cold spells but temperatures will be similar or a bit higher than normal, meaning spring flowers are forecast to bloom three to four days earlier."
Forsythias will start blooming on Jeju Island and in the city of Busan first around March 12th.
Then the warmer southern cities of Daegu and Gwangju will see these flowers on March 14th and the 16th respectively, while the capital city, Seoul, will see its first blooming flowers around March 24th.
The bright pinks of Azaleas will be seen a day later than Forsythias on Jeju Island and will bloom in Busan on March 16th, Gwangju on March 22nd, Seoul on March 24th and then the eastern city of Gangneung on March 25th.
Spring flowers reach their full bloom around a week on from their blossoming dates.
This means in Seoul, people will be able to enjoy both Forsythias and Azaleas in abundance from the end of March.
