The Teutonic Knights were established to help the sick and injured in the Holy Land in a similar vein as the Knights Hospitaller. Once they were battle-tested in war, however, they were commissioned to be full-fledged fearsome warriors, fighting for the cause of Christendom. Those causes would have the Teutonic Knights leave the Holy Land altogether when they were redeployed to Eastern Europe.

A thing about Christians, at least back then they believed heavily in god, after a loss they would come back and keep going, not letting a few losses bring them down they kept coming back and the determination that they had was a key factor in winning

Great job on this video, the Teutonic Knights and that area of Europe are an often overlooked part of history. Learned a lot from this video!

Come on guys. The the Order of the Teutonic Knights of St. Mary's Hospital in Jerusalem was established as a hospital brotherhood near the seaport Acre in the Holy Land in the year 1190, during the third Crusade. They felt that the Hospitallers were given favor to French Knights and that the German Knights needed better healthcare.

Grand Duke Jogaila prevented the deaths of many on both sides by converting to Christianity when he did.

Wouldn’t it of been hilarious if when Hitler disbanded them a bunch of guys in 13th century armor and teutonic heraldry just strolled up saying “I just want to talk to him.”

The City of Acre was the capital of the Crusader state for almost exactly 100 years until once more resurgent Muslim forces re-captured most of the holyland. Acre was the last City to fall, most of the remaining members of the other military orders including the Templars and Hospitallers went down fighting on the wall to the last, but not the Teutonic order, with their perhaps more rational ethos negoiated a way out. All the military orders who existed in Acre at the time of the final Siege and the fall of Acre, they all fought, still the city fell, we know however the Teutonic Knights headquarters, which they called their Convent, actually negotiated it’s surrender to the victorious Muslims the Mamluk Army which had broken in and the survivors left. So in a way the Teutonic Knights went out with a bit of a whimper rather than a bang.

WTF? Could you elaborate pelase how exactly Battle of Grunwald turned into defeat for Polish-Lithuanian Union? Also, conveniently no mentioning of The Order attack on Poland and grabbing not only Gdańsk, but whole Pomerelia in 1308/1309 ? No word on Jogaila being baptized as a part of union with Poland (and becoming king of Poland) ? No word of The Order turned into Polish fief after Thirteen Year War ? Also, you're mismatching place names... Pomerelia WAS NOT Prussia. And The Order had been kicked out of Duchy of Prussia in time of its secularization in 1525.
A lot of small, bigger and colossal mistakes in this movie ...

Russia didn’t existed at the time. Nevsky was a Novgorod prince (as far as I recall), so partially a heritage of pre-Mongolian invaded Rus (Kiev).

Interesting but way too superficial of an analysis. The Knights were cagey, corrupt and brutal raiders and overlords who, using a divide and conquer approach, reduced the Prussians to serfdom before ultimately exterminating them. They should have wore black rather than white cloaks; they used the sword not the Bible. Their ranks were constantly replenished by knights from France and England any time the Knights experienced severe defeats. You skimmed over their long, back and forth, conflict with the Lithuanians which deserves more attention, particularly the role of Lithuania's foremost monarchs who battled them, notably Vytenis, Gediminas and Vytautas (the Great), Jogaila's first cousin. The Knights participated in Lithuanian civil wars alternating their support of competing princes. The Knights even allied with and provided troops to Vytautas to combat the Tartars. What is interesting is that in spite of their small population base and the might of the heavily armed Teutonic Knights and the Livonian knights, Lithuania became the largest nation in Europe stretching from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea in the 1400's.
