Punishment of France? Flash floods hit Marseille
Parts of southern France have been placed on alert after a weekend of torrential rain caused floods, prompting authorities to shut schools.
The amount represents 2 months' worth of the city's average October rainfall. Travel was disrupted in the region and a number of train services were suspended.
Flash floods hit parts of the city of Marseille in southern France after 173 mm of rainfall fell overnight, with most of it in the space of 2 hours.
Some of the residents living on the banks of the river in the Saint-Loup district were evacuated ahead of the storms.
Meteo France warned of the risk of significant flooding along the banks of Huveaune River, which runs through Marseille, and urged locals to be vigilant as storms were expected to last into the night.
Marseille Mayor Benoit Payan ordered residents to stay at home, amid concerns that further rainfall may intensify flooding.
The worst affected were parts of eastern Marseille, including the areas of Valmante, Les Olives, La Valentine and La Pomme.
Heavy rains also hit central parts of the country with 150 and 300 mm of rain in 24 hours over Cevennes, and up to 458 mm in Villefort, Lozere. Representing about 3 to 4 months of rain.
Helicopters helped in the rescue of around 30 people from a motorway between Langlade and Gallargues le Montueux. Another rescue of 10 people took place in Aigues-Vives.
Firefighters carried out around 100 operations as a result, evacuating 40 people and locating two missing people who were both found suffering from hypothermia and taken to hospital.
In Gard, fallen trees caused power cuts affecting 3,000 homes, while the storms disrupted train services across the Occitanie region.
The rainfall was particularly heavy around Nîmes, where pedestrians had no choice but to wade through a flood of water flowing through the streets.
