I thought it would have had two openings. With the fire in the middle actually under the earth, to decrease the smoke output. Maybe I'm thinking of a different native American fire pit?

Your fire went out because you didn't dig the second sloped hole with a tunnel linking the two... Allowing air flow to help fuel the fire with oxygen..

That is a hole in the ground. That is not a Dakota Fire. Maybe you could Google it before you record the process? It is 2 holes next to each other with a little tunnel between the two. The air pulls through the one into the fire in the other. Use dry tinder and kindling and you will have less smoke. Also, if the ground is wet, you will need to line it with dry bark, leaves, or small pebbles. Depending on what's available.
