The, "Genetic Dynasty", is very creative and clever. Bringing Asimov's Foundation Books to the screen in series form is most likely the best way to properly showcase the material with the depth it deserves. Hopefully we will get to see all eight seasons, which should cover all or most of the Books.

This along with Dune, is the type of Science Fiction that sophisticated people enjoy, and will give a mature audience something they will eagerly tune in to see. Smart move on Apple's Great video.

I really think a lot of credit needs to be given to the team behind the adaptation of The Expanse, for paving the way for the new wave of deeper Sci-fi. It's great to see older IP's like Foundation and Dune visited again with a focus on a well polished end product, especially given production technology is now at a place that can better deliver those visions for a far more reasonable cost. I'd love to see Blake's Seven re-visited in his fashion too.
Thanks as always, Cookies, have a super great day!

I sincerly hope that the Foundation series and Dune movie put science back into Science Fiction. Then again, in the words of a very wise man, "Don't Panic!" o7

I can see the cloned emperor as a metaphor for stagnation. Good idea. Still, I would have preferred a Black Mirror type anthology in with we had stories about the political life of a time of an inflection point along with a few personal stories then jump foward 50, 150, years or so to the next inflection point. You could tell the whole story from many points of view like it was envisioned. IMHO

Funny enough, the things he talks about as a nature of Foundation, in the quote you showed, is exactly the things about Foundation is what I love the most about it.

I am always pleased when someone tries to put these books to film or TV or whatever, it takes a lot to do this and I just want to see it. I don't really care if they add a little bit or take a little bit away just get it on film so I can see it see if you see it the same way I did when I read it all those years ago when it was just a short stories I've read everything Asimov has written and wanted more everything Herbert has written and definitely wanted more so this is a very pleasant thing for me.

I find the changes intriguing. What I have heard so far makes for a potentially better series for the television medium. What a year for science fiction!

I'll keep my mind open to what they are trying with the Foundation series. I don't have high hopes though.

Perhaps I will be surprised.

Personally, I suspect the series would be easier to tell from the Second Foundation point of view.

Not having read (yet) the Foundation series, this aspect of series has stuck with me, so his bet onto this liberty really worked. It's very interesting for a sci-fi context! Even if it comes from a concept not present in the source material.

After watching the first season I enjoyed the addition of the Cleonic Genetic Dynasty.

Cautiously intrigued. I don't dislike the concept, in fact I find it rather interesting, and as good as the concepts for Foundation are, the Empire can certainly be considered bland and simplistic. It is understandable as Asimov wrote the first stories in his twenties, while studying for his doctorate and participate in WW2 and wrote the last in the last decade of his life when he knew he didn't have a whole lot of time left. He was a busy man and I appreciate what he did. I hope this new, original concept pans out and adds the right amount of "relief" often missing in the stories and doesn't ruin it instead. Only time will tell.

I wonder who the 6th character would be... Maybe Wanda or Dors? I hope they get around to the Mule

I agree. 2021 harkens back to the cornerstones of sci-fi and the greatest influence for both sci-fi and fantasy and pop culture in general.
I don't mind the genetic dynasty because in a way, both adaptations of Dune and Foundation seem to be borrowing elements from each other. Which is great. As both inspired pop culture and Dune was heavily inspired by Foundation. So it seems fitting that some elements of both space operas cross over. That being said, it will also symbolize the problems of the Galactic Empire. Why it refuses to change. As one commentator here said, it will show the stagnation. After a lot of time has passed, it can't see that drastic measures are needed to preserve humanity and acknowledge the dark times that are coming.

I still take offense to the "for four centuries" and "thousands of worlds" BS in the trailer. Why do TV sci-fi writers think in such freaking small terms? The Empire had been around for 12, 000 years and included not 10, 000 worlds, but 25 million. MILLION. Space, as a wise man once said, is big. Really big. This is small. S-m-all. It's Star Wars all over again, with its galaxy seemingly made up of a dozen planets and three or four families.

Excellent video that explains many of the creative choices by the showrunners who were brave enough to try and adapt the unadaptable. Asimov Literature purists will never be happy, and will not lend support if the TV show craters. I am quite happy with this 1st season and commit myself completely to the hopefully remaining 7 seasons.

Great discussion of the project, and the modifications that are being made to it!

The person who they should have brought on for the series is SF writer Donald Kingsbury. It's the only work not written by Asimov that I know of that is considered Canon for the universe. Here is what Wikipedia says:

"In 1995, Donald Kingsbury wrote "Historical Crisis", which he later expanded into a novel, Psychohistorical Crisis. It takes place about 2, 000 years after Foundation, after the founding of the Second Galactic Empire. It is set in the same fictional universe as the Foundation series, in considerable detail, but with virtually all Foundation-specific names either changed (e.g., Kalgan becomes Lakgan), or avoided (psychohistory is created by an unnamed, but often-referenced Founder). The novel explores the ideas of psychohistory in a number of new directions, inspired by more recent developments in mathematics and computer science, as well as by new ideas in science fiction itself. It's a great addition to the overall story and gives more depth to the worldbuilding in the show.
