2022 Volkswagen ID.5 Review

The all-electric Volkswagen ID.5 is designed to be a sleeker take on the German firm's ID.4 SUV, and competes with cars such as the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model Y.

It's hard to keep pace with the number of new electric SUVs being launched these days. One of the latest is the VW ID.5, which brings a more stylish design take to the segment in an attempt to win over buyers. Despite its sloping roofline, the ID.5 still features a huge boot and plenty of room for passengers. What it does not do, however, is live up to the sporty drive promised by its sleek looks.

In this CarGurus UK review, Vicky Parrott tests the entry-level Pro model with 172bhp and an official range of up to 327 miles to explain why the ID.5 perhaps isn't the EV you might expect it to be. She assesses the car's practicality, performance, real-world range, and in-car technology to reveal its strengths and weaknesses, as well as how it compares with its sister EV, the ID.4, and other electric car contenders.

The ID.5 is priced from just under £50,000 for this entry-level model. Would you consider one for your next car?

Hmm, looks like the Kia EV6 beats it on every aspect.

Best looking ID model so far I think, but definitely doesn't look like a £50k car.

I would rather have a Kia EV and pocket the savings.

these electric cars are very expensive... and what to do with 280 miles range?

Does it have a sentry camera mode like Tesla to monitor for damages to your car while parked?

Both ID3 and ID4 felt quite cheap for what you pay when I got in them. Looking at the video, I think the feel would be the same with the ID5.

Many thanks Vicky for the clear concise and balanced review. I doubt this car will be on my test drive list in part due to the over use of touch controls for basic functions. The lack of lumbar adjustment on the drivers seat would also be a big no. On the plus side the style is OK and from what we can see in the video the inside looks like a pleasant place to spend time for most without a creaky back. The Tetris tail like dance looks cool as you mention even if it has little practical function other than to tell you (and others) that this is your vehicle. If I was in the market today for an EV the Enyaq would be higher on my list even though it shares many things with this VW EV's.

I enjoyed this, I am interested to know when the Chinese EV cars will flood the UK Market with the latest new Blade battery technology. It makes the current battery technology obsolete and inferior...

This is a Golden opportunity and new wave era of new car manufacturers to enter the EV market ... No one will care if it's a Merc or BMW or Audi badge, what people care about is real world long rage target 400miles + and super fast charging ie 10 mins with zero battery degradation, that is what we are on the cusp of and the technology ...

Was looking at this car until you mentioned no lumbar adjustment. Thats a big no from me.

It'd feel like such a kick in the teeth to have spent over £50k on the iD.5 only to then have it be "just OK"...! 😲

Thanks for another great review! Vicky, you're one of the very best. Looks like VW is listening, though it has a way to go. All EVs are getting better and better, but I'm still holding out for longer range (Given it's prudent to keep the battery between 20-80%, and given temp and terrain changes, even 350 miles is REALLY only 280 miles at best), and more charging infrastructure. Big applause to those who've put their hard-earned cash behind the charge to change! My e-bike serves my urban needs for now :)

I will keep buying used combustion engine cars 50k is to much for a range anxiety car

I hate those haptic and touch sensitive controls. For those alone I wouldn't ever buy one. But add all the other faults like the looks especially from the front, the tiny and useless drivers display, Lane assist etc etc. Kia ev6 every single day over any vw ev

I have been driving my id5 max full tec pack for 6 months now and is brilliant. Better comfort, better build and riding quality and more quiet than model x I had previously. DCC is great. I tested range with temp between -2 - 6 degree and with heat pump, no eco mode, no air con but auto air mode. I get average 2.4 miles/kwh, around 200 miles mixed motorway and city in UK. That is great consider it only has 77 kw battery. I get 3.5 - 4 miles/kwh, 260 miles mixture use in summer. Software is currently on 3.0 and has slow response but really doesn't bother me because I only probably spend 2% of my time use it and rest of the time driving. Full driving assist is similar to auto pilot on Tesla and works brilliantly, personally I feel safer in ID5 than model x when auto pilot mode is engaged. Not many ID5 max is around in the UK at the moment and hope my 6 months driving experience could contribute to the EV community.

Great review Vicky, honest and objective but the car really is as dull as dishwater. Is this really the best VW can do?
The phrase Dammed with Feint praise springs to mind.
Sorry but not for me.

It seems everyone is on a downer where VW is concerned these days. That’s a shame because they’re still producing very good cars.

Too expensive for my piggy bank Vicki and if performance wise is anything to go by I prefer the Mache.

Seems so strange to me that VW would focus on selling this utterly pointless car when they already have the ID 4. I’d much prefer an electric estate.

Great video as always Vicky. Slightly strange amount of repetition in the script this time around.
