Never heard a gas station referred to as a garage. A bonus difference lost in the pond

This has caused problems. At a petrol station in Northamptonshire during a business trip, my colleague filled up from the green nozzle. Fast forward 5 hours, we're in a BP carpark getting all that unleaded pumped out of our diesel Renault at a cost of about £900.

Worth noting that Shell was formed after a merger between a British and Dutch company. While Shell was founded in the UK, Royal Dutch Petroleum was generally the dominant element in the corporation after the merger. It only moved from Amsterdam to London a few years ago

Bp is the special child that wasn’t told that special doesn’t always mean good

Technically BP used to stand for British Petroleum - for some years the company’s legal name has been simply ‘BP’. They did briefly use the strap line ‘Beyond Petroleum’ but strictly it no longer stands for anything.

I've lived here my entire life and never noticed the pump handle cover colors were standardized.

I used to only get my gas at Circle K, but on a road trip we were going through a little town that only had a BP. I'd been driving for roughly 8 hrs and was exhausted so you can imagine the absolute terror in my soul when I look down, see the green and think I'm filling my car up with diesel. I've never been so happy to be wrong in my life.

I worked at a BP for 4 years. The confusion from some customers about it was common. Though some tended to get mad at me for it, even though I, as a lowly cashier, couldn't control the color of the pump handles.

When I moved to the East coast and had to use BP gas stations it confused me. I called out the attendant who told me that green was unleaded… just glad the pump doesn’t activate unless the correct button was selected.

In Canada, I replace the 'handwarmers' regularly. It doesn't seem to matter outside of the brand. Diesel is almost always Yellow, and Gasoline might be red, black, green. Although Costco is Green for Diesel.

Wow I haven't seen Esso stations here in the US since I was a kid. They became Exxon. Doesn't matter what color the BP handles are- I go there because I get 15 cents a gallon off when I use my BP card.

My parents have a Swedish spec volvo 240dl. People think it's diesel because the gas tank cap is green. But it's a petrol. The diesel volvo uses a black cap.

The green gas pumps at BP got my dad when I was a kid. He was on a road trip in his Cummins that was just about to break 10k miles, and grabbed the green handle thinking it was diesel. Took him an extra week to get home after needing a new engine

My BP also has a silver handled pump for ethanol free which i use in my small engine yard equipment and my Suzuki Carry DD51-T.

I always figured the gas pump being green was a branding thing since their main color for their logo has historically been green.

Such important information. Thanks Laurence 😊

It depends on the state! Some states DO regulate pump color using the EU standard colors, and also some stations choose to do it as well for liability reasons (diesel in an unleaded engine etc.)

This sounds like something they should have tried to teach me during Driver's Ed.

BP operates a refinery in Cherry Point, Washington, which is near wher I live. Some of my cousins used to work there. I never knew about the difference in gas pumps.
