Once the gate staff, who are not officers, are familiar with the drivers they rarely do checks on exit. I really don't think it's as deep as people are making out.

He knew that staff are complacent and took his chance.

14 years of defunding the Prison Service, that's the problem.
He left through an open gate.

When Sunak cut prison spending by £900m and staff by thousands what did you expect?!

It is Labour's fault after 13 years, isn't it?

I know a guy who escaped from a local prison, by simply climbing into the back of a delivery truck when nobody was looking, you'd be surprised how complacent guards can be when there isn't enough staff to do the job right.

This new police commissioner isn’t the sharpest tool. Obviously any escape from any British prison is pre planned, otherwise security is even worse than this. They’d just walk out.

In the early to mid 1990s I delivered to a prison in London and the lorry was throughly searched going in and going out. Once inside between two locked gates. The officers checked the cab, underneath and the back of the lorry on the way in and on the way out. Don't forget this was over 5 years before the infamous 9-11 incident.

The way that the prison kept the yeast secure. I had to take it right inside the locked area. Anyone wanting the yeast would have to go through two locks to get at it. If the prisoner wanted meat then its just one lock.

so as an ex Security Manager in the Prison Service, this highlighted 2 weaknesses, which would have been observed by the prisoner over time, and this probably inspired the escape, the staff did not check the number of prisoners when the vehicle arrived, to when it left, it was then allowed into the sterile area where it should have been searched, including the underneath by the staff, again this did not happen, prisoners will look for weakness in security and exploit them, as this guy did.

All it needs is for the gate guards to be understaffed, overworked and complacent and for this fellow to notice.

Properly checking a vehicle takes time and effort, if you're covering some other duty at the same time or later you crawling about under a van could be the difference between you having time to have lunch or go the toilet.
Especially if the rules regarding breaks aren't being strictly followed.

Getting out of prison -hard
Getting out of the U.K. - easy.

I don’t think we will be seeing this chap again.

I've noticed a lot they are saying "he doesn't pose a threat but do not approach just call 999" they are desperate for a "caught by police" headline! If he gets caught by a dog walker they will look even worse than they do (if even possible)

So many experts with in-depth knowledge of what happened. 😂
