Mixing bass doesn't have to be overly complicated. In fact, you can get it done in just two steps.

Long-time bass player/engineer here - I disagree with the notion that bass guitar compression is optional. It takes incredible skill to play an electric bass so that every string at every fret produces the same sound amplitude. Try it yourself and watch the meter as you play. If you can keep it all within 9 dB you are doing really well. It does not take a LOT of compression to fix this. Pro live performance bass players typically have a compressor somewhere in their signal chain.

Thanks for your common sense approach. I always feel encouraged after watching. 👍

I find recording my bass direct and dry to my interface is the best option, after that I can crunch it and EQ it as needed. But yes getting the level and tone is essential at the input.

Love the new set up!! 3 cameras?? Really cool man!
I like the idea of matching the “fwump” of the kick with the “fwump” of the bass. I hadn’t thought of it like that before… but when you get the bass and kick at the right level with each other it seems to hit even harder 🤘🏼
Great video Joe!

Excellent job Joe! The advice on kick drum side chaining is spot on. Kudos for having the guts to say it.

I'm recording my CD right now. I'm going to make sure I check out all of these tutorials. Plus, I really dig the sound of your band. I am going to definitely be checking it out. Thanks Joe

Another great video of yours, thank you! I make music just as a fun thing at an amateur level in different genres than yours, but the knowledge and experience you share is always applicable. I learn so much! Thank you!🙏

Geeze Joe now I have your bass line stuck in my head LOL. If you didn't already have the drum track I'd have to send you one. Thanks for the tips.

Thanks, Joe. Another great encouragement; the old 'kiss' approach.

Off topic: Do you like peanuts? Do you like dill pickles? I recommend a peanut butter 'n pickle sandwich. Ya won't know until you try it. 🙂

Thanks again for sharing all your wisdom.

Hey Joe - Great video, solid advice! Any chance you're going to make it NAMM in January? It looks like Fender is coming back full force -- it would be awesome to see you and that Gregor guy as well.

It’s one thing to understand what you are trying to do, it’s entirely different fighting out how to actually do it!

Can you do a video on how to mix drums? As a guitarist, every time i go to mix drums i just get confused. the way that drum sets are miked baffles me, and i have no clue how to get the drum mix to best serve the song i'm working on. just some guidelines would be great.

Since Low mids are important for bass but also heavy guitars, how would you blend them together? :-)

Hi Joe...
I'd like to throw something over the wall to you. I'm a multi-instrumentalist in the process of recording a full album (in a rather decent home studio). Bass is extremely important to me (first instrument learned). I'd like to share how I approach a bass in the mix. First, my music is dense (multiple keyboards etc.). To get exactly what I'm hearing in my head, Bass is one of the last instruments I record (I know this flies in the face of convention). The reason is, as we all know, there is a lot of sonic real estate taken up by a dense mix. By recording the bass (almost last), I can fit it into the mix with perfection. I subscribe to your concept of "get it right at the source" so when recording the bass, I adjust my bass preamp to fit precisely within the mix. I generally have a concept for it and will include any effects I want in the monitoring process.
Let me know what you think about my personal solution to a tailored bass sound.
PS...Loooove your channel.

Hey
Watching this was checking out the background at your setup.
I couldnt help but notice that it appears you dont have any treatment. I could be basing that off what I can see in background.
It would be awesome if you did a small in depth video of your setup.
