Trolling yourself. Love it. I think the most frustrating thing to me is there are people making good money that are indeed living paycheck to paycheck, but it's by choice, and they are crying as if people should care. Maybe that private school isn't worth it. Maybe that neighborhood isn't worth it. Maybe that house isn't worth it. Maybe your kid could get a decent education in public. Maybe you won't be scared for your life in that neighborhood. Maybe you can survive in less than 3000 sq ft. So many class choices driving spending.

I agree. Many people seem to mix up ”living paycheck to paycheck” with having no money left at the end of the month, because they spent it all, on whatever that might be.

I read a useful definition of paycheck-to-paycheck, used by one of these federal surveying agencies, that was basically, you couldn't afford to miss even a single check without being in financial trouble. Like literally, you could not skip a check, so you were surviving from one paycheck to the next, unable to miss a single one. You couldn't pay your bills if you missed even one paycheck.

My sign was when I put all of my bills on auto pay and had zero worry about whether or not the money would be there🎉

For years we would pay our bills and when something needed to be fixed we paid for it but we had no cash savings and we were putting a small amount of our income into retirement investments. Most of the time I could tell you how many hours before they next paycheck would hit our checking. We would mail a check for a utility or car payment so it would arrive the day our paycheck hit the bank. We had a lot of credit card debt. If we had missed a paycheck it would have been a big deal. But we were paying our bills. So I would say we were paycheck to paycheck.

Today that is not the case we have no debt have and fully funded emergency fund, no mortgage and putting a good amount into retirement. We still live like we are basically broke. Great feeling!

You are so right. Many people claim to be living paycheck to paycheck who are actually spending money on their wants when in reality their paycheck can't support spending money that way. A person needs to cover his/her needs first - then see if there's anything left for wants. That tells the real story. Living paycheck-to- paycheck is not a function of income but rather lifestyle. A lifestyle that's marked my desperation and anxiety when it comes to your money. The symptoms are the same financial uncertainty but the illness is either overspending or under earning.

It’s much cheaper to eat out in Taiwan. Not at fancy restaurants, just regular restaurants. That’s why many people only cook occasionally in Taiwan.
